Islamic Studies · 7 min readSalah (the five daily prayers) is the second pillar of Islam and the most frequently performed act of worship. For beginners — whether new Muslims or children — understanding its structure makes building a consistent prayer habit much easier.
The Five Daily Prayers: Fajr (dawn), Dhuhr (midday), Asr (afternoon), Maghrib (sunset), and Isha (night) structure a Muslim's entire day around remembrance of Allah, five distinct times over 24 hours.
Preparing with Wudu: Before every prayer, performing Wudu (ablution) — washing the hands, face, arms, and feet in a specific sequence — is a prerequisite that also serves as a moment of physical and spiritual cleansing.
The Basic Structure of a Rak'ah: Each prayer consists of units called Rak'ahs, involving standing (Qiyam) with recitation, bowing (Ruku), and two prostrations (Sujood), each with specific words of glorification.
Learning the Recitations: Beginners should start by memorizing Surah Al-Fatiha, a short additional Surah, and the fixed phrases said during bowing and prostration — these form the essential building blocks of every prayer.
Praying with Focus (Khushu): Beyond the physical movements, Salah is meant to be a moment of mindful connection with Allah. Slowing down and reflecting on the meaning of what is recited greatly enhances this connection.
Building the Habit: Start by mastering one prayer perfectly, then gradually add the others. Using phone reminders, praying alongside family, and learning in a supportive class environment all help make Salah a lasting, joyful habit rather than a burden.
