The Quran is not an ordinary book — it is the literal word of Allah, and Islam teaches a comprehensive set of manners (Adab) for how it should be recited, handled, and respected. Understanding this etiquette deepens the spiritual experience of engaging with the Quran.

Purification Before Touching: The majority of scholars hold that being in a state of Wudu is required to physically touch and hold the Arabic Mushaf, reflecting the elevated status of the text one is holding.

Facing the Qibla When Possible: While not obligatory, many scholars recommend facing the direction of the Qibla during recitation, as is customary in Salah, to reinforce the spiritual focus of the moment.

Beginning with Ta'awwudh and Basmalah: Reciting "A'udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim" before starting, and "Bismillah" at the beginning of each Surah (except Surah At-Tawbah), is a Sunnah practice that seeks Allah's protection and blessing before engaging with His words.

Respectful Physical Handling: The Quran should never be placed on the floor, used as a resting surface for other objects, or handled with unclean hands. Many households keep a dedicated, elevated shelf solely for the Mushaf out of reverence.

Reciting with Presence of Heart: Beyond correct pronunciation, the Quran should be recited slowly and thoughtfully (Tarteel), avoiding rushing through verses purely to finish a set portion, allowing the meanings to settle in the heart.

Disposing of Damaged Pages Respectfully: When a Mushaf becomes too worn to use, Islamic guidance calls for burying the pages in a clean location or otherwise disposing of them in a manner that preserves their sanctity, rather than discarding them as ordinary waste.

Teaching these etiquettes to children from a young age instills a lifelong reverence for the Quran that goes beyond mere recitation — it becomes a living, honored relationship with Allah's final revelation.
